Water is vital for life as our body is approximately 80% water. We should aim for 2 litres of fresh filtered
water daily.
Functions of water
- Acts as a solvent – blood 95% solvent (carries nutrients & wastes for excretion)
- Acts as a reactant – digestive system splits larger molecules into small molecules with water
- Acts as a lubricant – within joints; saliva & mucous in mouth, oesophagus; keeps food moving along
in small & large intestines
- Acts as temperature regulator – water is evaporated from the body surface the skin (perspiration) to carry heat away.
- Assists in removal of waste products from the body – skin, lungs, kidneys, bowel
Disturbances in water balances
- Abnormal loss of fluid; very high activity levels; severe trauma; different disease states (eg diabetes); diarrhoea; vomiting; excess sweating; fever; dehydration
When replacing water it is important to replace electrolytes also
- Sodium; Potassium; Chloride
How to replace electrolytes
- Bananas (potassium); Mineral water; Lemon juice; Molasses; Celery juice; Potassium broth; Alfalfa; Aloe vera juice; Fruit/vegetable juice; Kelp; Sea salt (celtic)
Signs & symptoms of dehydration
- Headaches; skin loses elasticity; decrease intra-ocular pressure (sunken eyes); muscle fatigue/cramps; decrease in urination; temperature irregularities; joint stiffness; lethargy/tiredness; dizziness; nausea; low blood pressure; mental confusion/disorientation; vagueness; dry skin (less perspiration); urine concentration (darker); jetlag
